Analytics

The Analytics area provides a top level overview of various statistics, graphs and totals.

Overview

In the MEDIAL back end site, clicking on the Analytics menu will open up the Analytics area where statistics are displayed for the content in MEDIAL. The Overview area displays such information as the top viewed content in the media library, the number of plays and completed plays, plays by device, media in category, uploader leaderboard, number of logins, encoder outcome (successful vs. failed encodes), most commented upon media, and key figures.

  • Period - Click on the Period radio buttons to set the period, or select Custom and set a start and end date for the analytics filter.

Some stats are ‘since records began’ so wouldn’t change

  • Top Content - Displays the most played clips in MEDIAL
  • Combined by time - Check the following options to add a line graph total of the following by time (the time line varies according to the Period selected at the top):
    • Plays -The total individual plays of the item regardless of who played it and how many times it was played. Grouped into days or months as appropriate to period selection.

    • Average daily uniques -Total of unique users who played the item in each day – averaged out over the period shown on each month (or day if time period is less than 90 days).
    • Total time watched (hours) - Total time played for all users even when multiple plays for same user or replayed over the same time position.

    • Completes - When the playback duration for a clip reaches 80% (for each user viewing it), it is considered mostly complete. A date stamp is held for this point in time. These date stamps are used to find how many mostly completed clips there are for the time period shown on the graph.
  • Plays by device - (Overview and Media Item areas).

  • Media per category - Displays a pie chart showing a percentage of media items in the 7 largest categories within the given time period.
  • Uploader leaderboard - Shows 7 users with the highest number of uploads from within the given time period.
  • Number of logins - The total number of MEDIAL logins during graph time point (month or day depending on length of Period)
  • Encoder outcome - Percentage of successful vs. failed transcodes by MEDIAL.
  • Highly commented media - Top 5 most highly commented on media items within the given date period.

Media Item

This area provides detailed statistics for single media items. The Keywords, Category, Contributor and Filename fields can be used to search for media items in the media library. In order to search only one field needs to be filled out. To increase the granularity of the search, fill in more fields.

  • Keywords - Enter a keyword for the clip(s) to search for.
  • Category - Select the category where the clip(s) reside.
  • Contributor - Enter the name of the contributor.
  • Filename - If the exact file name is know, it can be entered to find the exact clip.

When the search is performed it will return a list of clips matching the search criteria. When the downwards arrow on the right-hand side is clicked it will reveal more information about the clip. Clicking the check mark will select the clip.

When the clip is selected a date range can be applied to return the analytics for it from within the given range.

The following analytics are displayed for the clip when the desired date range is selected:

  • Engagement by clip position - When users in MEDIAL play the clip a percentage of their engagement is built up. This is aggregated across all users that view the clip. As you play the media here a time indication and graph shape will show where users lost engagement with the media.

  • Plays by device - As on the Analytics Overview screen, this shows the distribution of plays across different devices.

  • Combined by time - Check the boxes to add a line graph total of the following by time (the time line varies according to the Period selected at the top):
    • Plays - The total individual plays of the media item regardless of who played it, and how many times it was played. Grouped into days or months as appropriate to period selection.
    • Average daily uniques - The average of the number of users playing the clip each day. (The same user viewing a clip multiple times in the same day registers as just one play).
    • Total time watched (hours) - Shows the total number of hours the clip has been watched across the date range.
    • Completes - When the playback duration for a clip reaches 80% (for each user viewing it), it is considered mostly complete. A date stamp is held for this point in time. These date stamps are used to find how many mostly completed clips there are for the time period shown on the graph.

  • Engagement by person - There is a list of statistics that are gathered per user against each media item viewed. These can be seen by clicking on the graph element for each user shown. One of those statistics is the engagement percentage (percentage viewed of item). This is the one shown by default in this graph.
